Do you want to cancel your car insurance in Germany?
Use our tool to easily create a car insurance cancellation letter.

You have the right to terminate your car insurance contract at the end of the insurance year (G2.1 AKB 2015). You must give one month’s notice.

Because of the one-month notice period, you can cancel your car insurance policy on November 30. However, your insurer must receive the cancellation request before this deadline.

You have a special right to cancel the car insurance contract in certain cases. For example, a premium increase, the insurer refuses to pay the damages, you sold your car, etc.

You can download the cancellation letter in PDF format for free or send it directly by post by clicking a button.
We recommend sending it by registered post (Einschreiben) to ensure legal proof.

Normal termination of contract

Car insurance policies usually run for 12 months. You can cancel the contract by giving a one-month notice period at the end of the insurance year, i.e., by 30th November.

Not all car insurers offer contracts that run until the end of the year. Policies with a term of less than one year are becoming increasingly common.

There are two ways to calculate the contract term: Insurance year or Calendar year.

  • The insurance year starts when you conclude the contract and ends after 12 months.
  • The calendar year starts on 1st January and ends on 31st December of the same year.

Example: Suppose you took the insurance plan on 1st June 2025. In this case, you can cancel your policy on

  • December 31, 2026, if the contract says “Calendar year”
  • 31st May 2027, if the contract says “Insurance year”

For most insurance policies, the notice period is three months to the end of the insurance year or calendar year.

Termination after an extraordinary contribution adjustment §205 paragraph 4

If the insurer increases the premium or reduces the insurance benefits, you (the policyholder) have a special right to terminate the contract. You can cancel your contract within two months after being informed about the change. The cancellation will take effect when the higher premium or reduced coverage starts.

For example, suppose the insurer informs you about the increase in insurance premiums in April. In this case, you have two months (i.e., until 30 June) after receiving the letter to terminate your contract.

Right to cancel the contract (Widerrufsrecht)

The Widerrufsrecht is the legal right to withdraw from an insurance contract within a specific time frame without giving a reason. You generally have 14 days from the day you receive:

  • The insurance policy,
  • The contract terms and conditions, and
  • A written notice of your right to withdraw (Widerrufsbelehrung).

For life insurance and private pension insurance, the withdrawal period is extended to 30 days.

You can exercise your right to withdraw in writing. We recommend sending a letter to the insurer via registered post. Registered post acts as legal proof of timely termination.

Once you cancel the contract by exercising the “Widerrufsrecht,” it is considered void. The insurer must refund any premiums you paid.

NOTE: You don’t have the right to withdraw if the insurer entirely performed the contract before you exercised the Widerrufsrecht.
